Tennis ELO calculator: how to calculate your level

How does a tennis ELO calculator work? Discover the ELO formula applied to tennis and how DEUCE calculates your level automatically.

What is a tennis ELO calculator?

A tennis ELO calculator determines how many ELO points you gain or lose after each match. This is the core mechanic of the tennis ELO ranking system. On DEUCE, this calculation is fully automatic.

The tennis ELO formula explained simply

Step 1: calculate the expected result

Example: if you have 500 ELO and your opponent has 600 ELO, you have about 36% chance of winning. A win on your part earns you many points.

Step 2: calculate the points exchanged

  • Expected win → few points gained
  • Surprising win → many points gained
  • Expected loss → few points lost
  • Surprising loss → many points lost

Concrete ELO calculation examples

You beat a stronger player (450 vs 550 ELO)

→ You gain +22 points → New ELO: 472

You lose to a stronger player (450 vs 550 ELO)

→ You lose -8 points → New ELO: 442
